Each year, there are more new cases of skin cancer than that of breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancers combined. In the US, skin cancer tops the charts with more cases than any other cancer. A person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had 5 or more sunburns in their lifetime.  Given these statistics, here are 5 simple ways to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

  1. Use a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen

  •    UVA Rays make up 95{c3cafd7fc8ff13ad47c5d182b2b2c07dcbbde91edc5bb6fd90c4c6dd1092bea1} of the sun’s rays. Not only do they go through clouds and glass, they penetrate deep into the skin’s thickest layer. Studies show that UVA contributes to and may even start the development of skin cancers.
  •    UVB Rays affect the outer epidermal skin layer causing sunburn, aging, and may cause permanent damage over time. These rays also play a significant role in the development of skin cancers.

  1. Avoid direct sun exposure between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm

  •    Your chances of getting a sunburn are greatest during these peak hours
  1. Find Shade

  •    Even in the shade, the sun reflects off sand, snow, water, porch decks, and other surfaces
  •    Snow reflects up to 80{c3cafd7fc8ff13ad47c5d182b2b2c07dcbbde91edc5bb6fd90c4c6dd1092bea1} of the sun’s rays
  •    Sea and sand can increase UV radiation by 25{c3cafd7fc8ff13ad47c5d182b2b2c07dcbbde91edc5bb6fd90c4c6dd1092bea1}
  1. Remember to reapply sunscreen consistently

  •    Sunscreen can wear off from sweat and time spent in the water
  •    It’s best to be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every 2 hours

Applying Sunscreen on Beach

  1. Apply sunscreen to all areas of your body

  •    Face, neck, ears, hands, and forearms are the most common      place for skin cancer to appear
  •    However, Melanoma (the deadliest of all skin cancers) can occur anywhere on the body
